This report and the data used:

The BC Transparency Report tries to calculate an average hourly, overtime and bonus pay wage based on the compensation received. The report excludes all employees who receive all or effectively all their income from sales commissions over fixed compensation. The way these employees are compensated are not compatible with this methodology and thus have been excluded. All other employees have been included.

Measures:

  • Mean – The average calculated by taking the total pay for each group divided the total hours worked
  • Median – The mid point for each group, this is less influenced by extremely high or low earners.

Percentage of employees in each gender category receiving bonus pay:

Explanation of differences:

  • Volatility of commission pay – Employees at Johnston Meier earn commissions for specific transactions that they help facilitate. The nature of commissions is volatile and may not be expected to be received in the following year. Commissions are included in Bonus Pay and are expected to fluctuate year to year.
  • Impact of Outliers on Gender Categories – Johnston Meier employees are predominantly female with 85% of our staff being female. As a result, male outliers skew the hourly wages more than an equivalent female outlier.
  • Categorization of Wages – The BC Transparency Report separates earnings into 3 categories hourly pay, overtime pay, and bonus pay. Based on the role of the employee some employees may earn more from hourly pay and other from bonus pay. If hourly and bonus pay are combined the pay difference is eliminated.
